The Swiss Parliament declined to join a working group led by the United States on sanctions against Russia, according to Bloomberg.

The agency states that the European Union and the United States have tasked the Group of Seven (G7) committee with freezing and confiscating Russian assets under sanctions.

However, Switzerland is resisting pressure to officially join the targeted group. Bern justifies this by stating that the country is already in regular contact with the group.

With 101 votes, parliament rejected a proposal from Switzerland’s Green Liberal Party. The proposal emphasized the country’s responsibility for effectively enforcing sanctions.

Sanctions issues in Switzerland

A representative from the Ministry of Economy told Bloomberg that the government welcomes parliament’s decision, as it confirms the executive branch’s position.

The publication notes that sanctions are a contentious issue in traditionally neutral Switzerland, where the government faces international and domestic pressure.

Recently, representatives of the Swiss People’s Party proposed holding a vote on permanently including non-joining in the country’s constitution. This could allow the government to join any sanctions.

Sanctions against Russia in Switzerland

The country has supported all EU sanction packages against Russia while attempting to maintain a neutral position due to its status. In early March, Bern joined the EU’s 13th package of sanctions against Russia.

Also in March, Switzerland’s Attorney General launched the first criminal investigation into potential sanctions violations related to Russia by an unnamed company.
