Support Anwar but push for changes, says Santiago
Former Klang MP Charles Santiago said being critical of the government is not a crime.
PETALING JAYA: The government is not properly addressing problems faced by the Indian community, while some people are trying to turn constructive criticism into attacks on the administration, former Klang MP Charles Santiago said.
“Instead of looking at the content of my posts, some are fashioning them to debate whether I am against Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim.
“This is exactly why Indian problems do not get resolved,” he said, adding that he had previously campaigned ferociously for Anwar despite being dropped as a parliamentary candidate.
Santiago said people must read his social media posts without an agenda or preconceived notions.
“I stood staunchly behind Pakatan Harapan, I asked people to vote for PH and I remain the same person.
“Being critical of the government isn’t a crime. I want PH to do better, so instead of politicking to score quick brownie points, let’s listen to the grievances of the Indians.
“Let’s ensure those aspirations form policies that will actually uplift them,” he said.
On Friday, Santiago posted on social media that he had recently visited Kuala Kubu Baharu, which will hold a by-election on May 11.
He said he met people from the Indian community, who claim they are not aware of or have not received state welfare; feel they are the subject of discrimination, and say there is a lack of political will to solve decades-old housing problems.
Political leaders should focus on solving these issues instead of wasting time arguing with one another, he said.
