Pride rally hits the streets of Iqaluit
People came out to take a stand and show their support. It's called the Rally for Rainbow Equality. It's part of a national Rainbow week of action where rallies and events are being held across Canada to show support. It's meant to fight against anti LGBTQ legislation and hatred against the community. It was awesome. We got to chant and tell people pride is good and they couldn't really argue. I'm so happy to be here. The energy is positive. It's so wonderful to hear people beeping their cars to support show their support. What we have to do is make sure that the LGBTQ issues are accepted. Not just tolerated, but accepted. Delaney Drakenberg is the lead organizer for the rally in a Callaway and is also a member of Vidya, a social justice organization. They said when they were a kid and realized they were transgendered. They felt alone and afraid, and they say they want the rally to be a symbol of hope. I think hope is when you've been beaten into the dirt and you crawl out of the dirt. With your nails and your teeth and you say I will continue to fight. It is when you refuse to back down and you choose to say that your love and your light will overcome the hatred that you see. Around 30 people showed up for the rally.
