Hillhead road is set to be closed for nearly eight weeks

Residents in a Cornish town have been warned to expect weeks of delays ahead of an upcoming road closure. A busy road between Falmouth and Mawnan Smith will be closed for nearly two months.

Drainage and utility works will be taking place along Hillhead Road near Pen Bethan, between Sunday (March 4) and April 26. Drivers travelling along Kergilliack Road will also be affected and will be diverted along the A39, Church Road and Penwarne Road.

There will be a 24-hour closure in place for the duration of the works, including at weekends. Residents in Falmouth have raised concerns that alternative routes to Mawnan Smith through Mabe or Roscarrack Road will be clogged with traffic.

Cornwall Council’s roadworks map has provided a detailed breakdown of the diversion route. It said an alternative route will be available for use while the order is in force being Kergilliack Road, Union Road, A39 between Antron Hill And Union Road, layby on A39 West Of Union Road Roundabout, Antron Hill, Church Road, Argal, Road From Hillhead Road To Penwarne Road, and Hillhead Road.

It did further clarify, however, that the notice will not apply to anyone attending emergencies, such as the loss of supplies of gas, electricity or water to premises in the area. In these cases, the vehicles will be allowed to enter the road where the repairs are taking place.
