One of the BBC’s most successful series from last year, Beyond Paradise, will get another season amid Death In Paradise speculation.

While names like Rupert Grint and Matthew Horne mentioned as possible successors to leading man Ralf Little, an update has been given on the popular spin-off.

The show saw Kris Marshall return as DI Humphrey Goodman as he attempted to adjust to life with his fiancee Martha Lloyd – played by Sally Bretton – on the Devonshire coast.

Its initial run was met with mixed reviews with Kris defending his return but gained a huge viewership of nearly nine million people in its first 30 days.

After two seasons and a Christmas special the show has solidified itself as a fan favourite — enough to warrant yet another renewal.

Viewers will return to Shipton Abbott as Beyond Paradise series three has been confirmed by the BBC, BritBox, and Red Planet Pictures.

The show will even grab a coveted Christmas special in 2024, with 6.2million having watched the mystery both live on December 24 and on catch up.

By comparison Doctor Who’s epic festive return pulled in over 10million viewers to date while King Charles’ message had 5.9million tune in for first broadcast.

It’s not just the festive season that has had huge viewing success as since its debut last year, episode one of series two has been watched by 7.5 million viewers so far.

The series ended on Friday, April 26, with Humphrey and Martha very nearly tying the knot as the local museum was robbed of it’s prize possession.

Meanwhile the couple’s fostering journey came to a heartwarming conclusion as they welcomed Ryan into their home.

While Humphrey may have left the crime solving behind in the Caribbean, murder-mysteries are a-plenty on the Devonshire coast.

Tim Key, executive producer for Red Planet Pictures, shared: ‘The response to series two has been fantastic. So much love goes into the making of the show and we’re delighted that the audience have enjoyed it so much.

‘We can’t wait to get back to Shipton Abbott for another Christmas special and series to continue the story and learn more about our characters and the town they live in — I can promise that we’ll be making the viewers laugh, cry, laugh a bit more and then baffling them with a series of ingenious puzzles.’

Teasing a little about what is to come, director of BBC Drama Lindsay Salt added: ‘There will also be a duck!

‘Beyond Paradise has become such a huge hit with millions of viewers across the UK. It’s a show that is absolutely on a roll, and we’re beyond pleased to bring more fiendishly clever mysteries from the Shipton Abbott team to the BBC.’

While the show is a spin-off from Death in Paradise, creator Tony Jordan and Tim have made it clear it is it’s own unique project.

Last year, Tony told Metro.co.uk: ‘We didn’t want to just do a cynical spin off. I think that’s doomed to failure, you have to do it with a bit of integrity and create a show that’s worthy of being on screen in its own right, not just as an add on to the main show.

‘What we tried to do was take the DNA of Death in Paradise, what we think the audience loves the most about it and find a different way of delivering that. Almost take the same ingredients but a different dish if you like.

‘We know that location is an important thing, that sight and sense of beauty, fresh air, escapism, we needed to pick an incredibly beautiful part of the UK.’

Tim added: ‘We have the freedom to tell stories in a different way with this show. We have created a format where it is almost slightly format-less.

‘We can start the show without a pre-title sequence, episode 1 doesn’t have a title sequence, episode 2 does, we can tell our stories in very different ways, whereas Death in Paradise is slightly more formatted in that sense.

‘The big thing that we can do in this show is really go into the lives of our characters and tell some really moving and truthful stories about where they’re at and, in a way, I think will surprise viewers who are familiar with Death in Paradise too.’

Beyond Paradise will return for series three, meanwhile the first two series are available on BBC iPlayer.
