Storm Finn set to sweep across the US bringing blizzards, flooding, tornadoes and freezing temperatures reaching -50 as 70million Americans brace for the worst

The storm hits as New England residents are still recovering from Storm Ember which dumped more than a foot of snow on the region

Around 70 million Americans are in the eye of a Storm Finn, a massive weather system that will bring blizzards, tornadoes and frigid temperatures.

This new system comes with many still recovering from the effects of Storm Ember, which dumped over a foot of snow in parts of the north east.

The National Weather Service has warned that Finn could bring record-breaking Arctic conditions across the Plains and throughout the western part of the country with blizzards expected in Chicago and St. Louis.

As a result of that cold air, temperatures could drop to 50 below in the Plains and as far west as Seattle.

Finn will also induce thunderstorms in the Southeast as well as flooding in New England, the area most effected by Storm Ember.

Tornadoes are expected through the central Gulf, close to New Orleans and into the Florida Panhandle on Monday night, with warnings lasting until Tuesday morning. Heavy winds and hail are also expected in that region.

Through Tuesday, the storm will move further east, hitting Florida’s state capital Tallahassee and other cities in the Sunshine State.

The Weather Channel’s senior meteorologist Chris Dolce called Finn a ‘kitchen sink storm.’

‘Finn’s threats cover a broad spectrum and the storm is just getting underway in the West,’ Dolce said.

‘Areas from the Central Plains to the upper Midwest and parts of the western and northern Great Lakes will see a combo of snow and strong winds, contributing to low visibility and dangerous travel conditions Monday through Tuesday,’ he added.

Over the weekend, winter weather battered both US coasts Saturday as New Englanders braced for an even more potent mix of snow and freezing rain through the weekend and a Sierra Nevada storm packing heavy snow shut down a stretch of interstate and briefly knocked out power to tens of thousands in Reno, Nevada.

Winter storm warnings and watches were in effect throughout the Northeast, and icy roads made for hazardous travel as far south as North Carolina.

The National Weather Service said it was a ‘major winter storm’ that continued into Sunday evening, with up to a foot of snow in parts of New England and pockets of rain/freezing rain in the central Appalachians.

In the West, a winter storm warning was in effect through Saturday night in the Sierra Nevada from south of Yosemite National Park to north of Reno, where the weather service said as much as 20 inches of snow could fall in the mountains around Lake Tahoe with winds gusting up to 100 mph over ridgetops.

The California Highway Patrol said numerous spinouts and collisions forced the temporary closure of I-80 for several hours from west of Truckee, California, to the state line west of Reno, where more than 27,000 homes briefly lost power in high winds at midday.

In Massachusetts and portions of Rhode Island, the National Weather Service declared a winter storm warning from 4 p.m. Saturday through 1 a.m. Monday, with snow accumulations of 6 inches up to a foot and winds gusting as high as 35 mph.

The weather service predicted similar levels of snow in portions of Maine and New Hampshire, with slightly less — 3 to 6 inches — in areas of Vermont.
