Storm chaser shows tennis-ball sized hail while tracking storms
We are just gotten out of a pretty hefty little hail storm. We got a little bit of rain that’s come in on the backside of this, which is a shame. So I was going to give you a walk and talk and show you some of the big hail out there on the ground. So you’re just going to have to settle for the video here. We’ll show that to you here. This just fresh in this was moments ago. We saw a hail up to tennis ball size. You see some of that there in my hands. That was enough to direct some windshields, mine included, as we were there on I-35 working our way in. This is some pretty hefty hail. Saw a lot of it in the ground, actually in holes. It hit the ground and you see what’s kind of my windshield looks like there. These are some of the shots. They’re panning across of some of the shots that we took as we were working our way in this kind of snuck up on us here at the last second. And now unfortunately, we were unable to make it in several motorists there taking shelter under an overpass. Folks, please don’t do that. We beg of you, do not clog overpasses. There were a lot of people sitting on I-35 when this rolled through because they were unable to get through because people were parking under the overpasses. But some folks there taking advantage of the truck stops, that is much more acceptable. Certainly wanted to go ahead and keep that in mind. This storm has moved off to the Northeast and has done so fairly quickly. We’ve got tornado warnings on that storm, nothing confirmed with that so far. We have had a few tornado warnings scattered throughout the day. This has been another long day. We we were on tornadoes yesterday by 1:00 and we’re seeing a very similar event, a little bit more messy down here so far. I’m kind of curious to see how that’s going to affect the overall evolution of today. We are under APDS potentially dangerous situation, tornado watch, a elevated layer of tornado watch here across central Oklahoma and that’s going to extend into Northeast Oklahoma and Southeast Kansas as well. So we are expecting. Quite an active day. Again, it’s been a little bit of a messy start so far. A lot of storms have kind of happened here on the western northwestern parts of Oklahoma. So really our focus, Melissa, is going to be a little bit further South. We probably will start to sneak S toward the I-40 area and get West of Oklahoma City to watch these storms as they move out of southwest Oklahoma as well as Texas. And those are going to be the storms we’re going to probably track. Those I think are going to pose the biggest threat for tornadoes as we go later into the afternoon. Again up here. It’s been kind of a a messy situation. Obviously some very, very large hail. You saw that in the video, 2.5 inches is what I measured here. That was after it gave my windshield little kiss. So we are already seeing some impactful storms in the region. We expect those to continue. Again, that PDS tornado watch in effect, we’ll see those tornado watches lining up throughout the rest of the day today. So again, expecting another busy day and this is going to go late into the night as we get further E into Oklahoma and Kansas and probably into Missouri as well. All right.
