Hundreds of kilometres from Alice Springs, remote Aboriginal communities are calling for change. After the Alice Springs youth curfew sparked wild debate about the future of the town, Federal and territory ministers gathered this week at Akunji Haast’s Bluff to sign a local decision making agreement with communities in the Nutjuda region, the first of its kind in Central Australia, sitting down and working out what resources are coming into the local community. And how they best used to fulfill the aspirations of that local community. Leaders in remote Aboriginal communities say they have a vital role to play in addressing rising youth crime in the region. We will take the blame for some of those children that are running amok in Alice Springs, but they argue nothing will change until their communities are properly empowered. People have spoken about closing the gap. They haven’t closed any gap. I think it’s turned into a chasm. The agreement will see governments partner with communities through a 10 year plan which provides community control over projects around economic development. Housing, education, employment and community safety. Leaders hope these community LED projects will go some way in addressing desperate levels of poverty and disadvantage in the region. It’s about all of us working together to make the future brighter and better for our children, a community dreaming of positive change.
