cowboys take 'elite receiving weapon' in latest mock draft

Florida State Seminoles wide receiver Keon Coleman (4)

When the Dallas Cowboys dealt Amari Cooper to the Cleveland Browns in 2022, it left a hole in their receiving corps. They address this need in a new mock draft, selecting a prospect with star potential.

In its latest mock draft, The Athletic predicted Dallas would take Florida State wideout Keon Coleman with the 24th overall pick.

“The 6-foot-4 Coleman is a physical specimen who had 11 touchdowns on 50 catches for FSU last season,” wrote Chris Vannini. “There’s no such thing as a 50-50 ball with Coleman, especially matched up against No. 2 cornerbacks. Giving [quarterback] Dak Prescott another elite receiving weapon.”

ESPN Draft analyst Matt Miller rated the 20-year-old as his fifth-best WR, comparing him to Atlanta Falcons star Drake London. Miller added he has impressive physical traits, but his consistency must improve.

“He goes up to attack the ball in flight as a receiver but also has the explosiveness and burst to be a dangerous punt returner,” wrote Miller. “Coleman’s size, strength and speed form a rare combination, but his late-season drop-off in production — he failed to record a 100-yard game after Week 7 — raises some questions.”

WR isn’t the Cowboys’ biggest need. In 17 games last season, CeeDee Lamb led the league in receptions (135), was second in receiving yards (1,749) and was third in receiving TDs (12), earning a first-team All-Pro nod.

Outside of Lamb, however, the receiving corp needs more depth. WR2 Brandin Cooks recorded 657 receiving yards in 16 games, his lowest figure since 2019. Per Pro Football Reference, Dallas averaged 4.8 yards after the catch, tied for 27th in the league.

The Cowboys should target another pass-catcher. If a WR with some upside falls to them in the draft, they shouldn’t pass on him.
