Sonic the Hedgehog 3 Star Teases Shadow's Introduction
Ben Schwartz, the comedic actor who plays Sonic the Hedgehog in the live-action/animated Paramount movies, believes fans won’t be disappointed by the introduction of Shadow the Hedgehog. The former Parks and Recreation actor says the upcoming Sonic the Hedgehog 3 movie will do the edgy hedgehog justice.
In a recent interview with Screen Rant, Schwartz acknowledged the high expectations fans have for the official live-action introduction of Shadow the Hedgehog, who will reportedly be played by John Wick and Matrix actor Keanu Reeves. However, he says fans will feel “taken care of” when they finally see Shadow on the big screen this year. “I love the intro to him in this film, and I think fans are going to be excited,” Schwartz said. “And I think fans understand how much we care about them, think about how much we changed the film from the response to the first trailer, which I think was the very right move. I think fans will feel like they’re being taken care of, I hope, because we always do it for them, and it hasn’t failed yet.”

Schwartz continued: “We get to make a third one, there’s a spinoff, so the idea that we’re still doing this, man, you think about where we started and where we are right now, it’s pretty remarkable. So we’re very excited.” Idris Elba, the actor who plays Knuckles in Sonic the Hedgehog 2 and the self-titled spinoff on Paramount+, expressed a similar sentiment, saying that Sonic the Hedgehog 3 will be for “diehard fans.”
Sonic the Hedgehog 3 Boasts a Strong Cast
In addition to Reeves as Shadow, Jessica Jones star Krysten Ritter is also joining Sonic 3 but her role has yet to be disclosed. Legendary comedic actor Jim Carrey is reprising his role as Doctor Ivo “Eggman” Robotnik. Based on the brief footage shared at CinemaCon 2024, Eggman puts on a few pounds after suffering another humiliating defeat from Sonic and his friends. While it’s unknown if this will be a temporary or permanent look for Eggman in the movie, it looks like Sonic 3 will finally introduce the egg-shaped Eggman that fans know and love from the video games.

While past Sonic movies have cherry-picked elements from the games, Sonic the Hedgehog 3 will draw heavily on Sonic Adventure 2. The Sega Dreamcast game features some heavy subject matter, such as the murder of Shadow’s close friend, Maria Robotnik, who will be played in the movie by Alyla Browne. Sonic the Hedgehog executive producer Toby Ascher compared the upcoming movie sequel to an “Avengers-Level Event,” demonstrating the confidence Paramount has in the franchise.
Sonic the Hedgehog 3 will be released in theaters on Dec. 20.
