Proposal to nominate Chinese new villages as Unesco heritage sites will be discussed with Umno, says NGA

PETALING JAYA: Let’s meet to discuss the proposal to nominate Chinese new villages in Selangor as Unesco World Heritage Sites, says Nga Kor Ming to Umno.

“Actually, I have contacted Umno leaders regarding this and invited them to discuss it so that they can get the facts.

“This is so they do not get influenced by sentiments being played up by the Opposition,” Sinar Harian quoted the Housing and Local Government Minister as saying.

He was met after a Chinese New Year event in Kampung Koh, Perak, on Sunday (Feb 11)

Yesterday, Umno deputy president Datuk Seri Mohammad Hassan said the party rejected the proposal. However, he said the differing views would not affect the relationship within the unity government.

Selangor Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari previously urged all parties not to turn the matter into a racial one.

“If we look at Kampung Kuang, Kampung Kundang, the Selayang area, Batu Caves, and several other areas, as well as Kampung Kemensah, they are all gazetted under the national Geopark, and the next step is to become a Unesco heritage (site).

“… all that has been done long before, but it is not seen as a useful thing because in their minds what issues can they spin for short-term political interests that do not bring benefits to racial harmony and stability in the country,” he said.
