Humza Yousaf går af som skotsk førsteminister. Det siger han mandag.

Skotland skal finde en ny førsteminister, efter at Humza Yousaf har meddelt sin afgang.

I en tale mandag i førsteministerens officielle residens, Bute House, i Edinburgh siger Yousaf, at der skal findes en efterfølger til ham.

Han vil træde tilbage som leder af regeringspartiet SNP, og partiet skal nu vælge en ny leder. Han fortsætter som førsteminister, indtil der er valgt en efterfølger.

Yousaf risikerede et mistillidsvotum i det skotske parlament.

Det skyldes, at et samarbejde mellem nationalisterne i Yousafs parti, Scottish National Party, og partiet Scottish Greens torsdag blev afsluttet på grund af uenighed om klimapolitikken.

Yousaf siger, at han havde håbet, at han og SNP, som har 63 af de 129 pladser i Skotlands folkevalgte forsamling, kunne fortsætte i spidsen for en mindretalsregering.

Den skotske leder troede, at han kunne arbejde med Scottish Greens på en mere uformel måde.

Men tilliden var der ikke længere, konkluderer den skotske leder.

– Jeg har fastslået, at forholdet på tværs af politiske skel kun kan repareres med en anden i spidsen, siger Yousaf ifølge nyhedsbureauet Reuters.

Humza Yousaf var Skotlands første muslimske leder.

Yousaf overtog sidste år i marts lederposten i Skotlands Nationale Parti, SNP, efter Nicola Sturgeon.

Hun meddelte i februar sidste år sin afgang som førsteminister og SNP-leder.

Den mangeårige løsrivelsesforkæmper sagde, at hun igennem nogen tid havde tænkt over det og ikke længere kunne lægge den nødvendige energi i hvervet.

Skotland stemte i 2014 nej til uafhængighed fra Storbritannien. Både Sturgeon og Yousaf fastholdt et ønske om løsrivelse.

– Uafhængighed føles frustrerende tæt på, siger Yousaf ifølge Sky News i sin tale mandag.

– Tro mig, ingen føler den frustration mere end lederen af SNP.
