humid weather causes 'surge' of funnel-web spiders across sydney

The biggest funnel web spider ever spotted has been found in NSW, coming in at a whopping 7.9cm long.

High rainfall and humidity are causing a “surge” in funnel-web spider sightings across Sydney.

The spiders are currently in the peak of their breeding season and are emerging from their burrows in search of a mate.

Once they emerge, the spiders seek sheltered and shady sports, making houses and gardens the perfect environment to visit.

“Funnel-web breeding season is here and all the rain this year has brought about humid conditions where funnel-web spiders thrive,” Australian Reptile Park Spider Keeper Emma Teni said.

“When found inside homes, Sydney funnel-web spiders prefer cool, damp places like the laundry, garage or in shoes left out on the ground,” Teni said.

“It is best to ensure you are not leaving washing and clothing on the floors, if you leave your shoes outside, make sure you check them first before putting your foot in blindly as shoes can be the perfect little burrow for funnel-web spiders.

“Pool filters should also be checked and cleaned regularly.”

The reptile park is urging people who think they may have been bitten by a funnel-web to stay calm, apply correct first aid with a pressure immobilisation bandage and to get to a hospital as quickly as possible.

The Australian Reptile Park is the only supplier of funnel-web antivenom, which is created from milking the spiders.

“It’s important that Australians are across the correct first aid and know how to safely catch the spiders so that we can continue to extract their venom and save lives,” Teni said.

“We rely on public donations of funnel-web spiders to build up our milking individuals.”
