should the eagles be concerned by departure of 'future gm' from front office?

Philadelphia Eagles general manager Howie Roseman lost his right-hand man.

During the NFL offseason, much of the focus is on players changing teams, but an often-overlooked aspect is front-office turnover. On Wednesday, the Philadelphia Eagles suffered a massive blow, losing longtime salary-cap executive Jake Rosenberg, who’d been with the team since 2012.

Many may not have known Rosenberg’s name before his announced departure. Still, as the right-hand man to elementary school pal and general manager Howie Roseman, he’s helped mold a blueprint for contract structuring and efficient cap-space management.

Nicole Lynn, agent for star quarterback Jalen Hurts, called Rosenberg leaving a “big loss” for the Eagles while also predicting he’ll be a general manager in the NFL sooner rather than later. Meanwhile, former pro scout Mike McCartney saw it as a negative for Philly, telling Jeff McLane of the Philadelphia Inquirer that he’d greatly benefit any team that brought him aboard.

With such high praise from various NFL circles, will losing Rosenberg hurt the Eagles? Probably not.

In addition to Roseman, the salary-cap guru himself, the Eagles have several people to fill Rosenberg’s duties, including Bryce Johnston, the vice president of football transactions and strategic planning.

According to Eagles insider John McMullen, Johnston’s duties include planning and executing salary-cap and resource allocation strategy, player acquisitions and contract negotiation and structuring. Meanwhile, Roseman praised Johnston for his work alongside Rosenberg in aiding negotiations of Hurts’ franchise-record five-year, $255 million contract extension signed in 2023.

Likewise, Adam Berry, brother of Cleveland Browns GM and former Eagles executive Andrew Berry, joined the Eagles after the 2023 NFL Draft, bringing his years of experience as managing director at Goldman Sachs to the team’s personnel and operations departments.

The Eagles have been here before, and while Roseman has been leading the charge, they haven’t missed a beat. Surrounding himself with intelligent, well-rounded thinkers has always paid off, but he’s the key to everything. As long as Roseman is around, the Eagles can breathe easily — at least in terms of the financial aspect of things.
