Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) owner and Bollywood legend Shah Rukh Khan was in attendance at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata on Tuesday (April 16) as Sunil Narine scored the maiden ton of his career in the Indian Premier League (IPL) when KKR hosted Rajasthan Royals (RR) in a blockbuster top of the table clash.

12 years after making his IPL debut, IPL legend Narine reached the three-figure mark for the first time in his career after Sanju Samson won the toss and chose to bowl first. The 35-year-old continued his brilliant form with the bat in the 2024 season after the suqrprise move to promote him to open the batting alongside Phil Salt.

Narine completed his century in just 49 balls as he finished with a knock of 109 runs in 56 balls at the Eden Gardens. The veteran all-rounder’s stunning effort saw KKR put up a massive score of 223 on the board. Angrish Raghuvanshi’s 18-ball 30 and Rinku Singh’s knock of 20 in nine balls gave Narine perfect support.

Shah Rukh Khan was among the happiest to see the club legend get to the three-figure mark for the first time in his career. The Pathan actor was seen dancing in joy as Narine reached the landmark and celebrated passionately in a video that has gone viral on social media.

Narine later came back to take two wickets with the ball to put KKR on course for victory with the game heading towards a tense finish as Jos Buttler continued a lone fight for the 2008 champions. During the innings break, Narine broke the silence on his return to the opening spot and credited Gautam Gambhir.

“I think it would have been a joke because I hadn’t opened the batting for a few years. I had in the past but didn’t believe. With GG coming back, he gave me the confidence and assurance that I will do good. I had to give the team a good start. The job is to give a good start, whatever the situation is. We have an understanding of the pitch. It won’t be easy. We have to make use of the powerplay. Try to pick wickets and restrict them to a low total as possible,” said Narine.
