nottingham pub wants 'much needed' outside revamp to stay popular, owner says

The Fox pub in Valley Road, Basford

The owner of a Nottingham pub has said “much-needed” changes are vital to keeping it popular with punters. The Fox Inn on Valley Road in Basford, which is operated by brewer Greene King, could have its outside area renovated according to new plans submitted to Nottingham City Council.

The company explained it had started plotting the improvements after assessing the business, which they said was “viable” but could be enhanced. The application seeks approval for two new covered outside pergolas to be added to the seating area at the front of the pub, which Greene King says will provide customers with improved facilities.

The existing astro turf would be replaced with gravel, while hoop top railings would be added to the boundary walls and timber fencing would also be replaced. Planning documents submitted on behalf of Greene King argued the alterations were of a “relatively minor nature” and would not impact the property visually.

The proposals would have no impact on the ground floor layout of the venue or on access to the site, the documents added. “The building has been altered over the years but requires some additional facilities and an improved appearance,” a representative for Greene King said in the submitted plans.

The pub chain said the availability of alcohol supermarkets and off-licences, together with increasing fixed costs and increased tax on beer, had accelerated pub closures to seven a day across the country. “Following the much-needed works [to] The Fox Inn, it is hoped will maintain its popularity within the area,” documents added.

The planning application is pending consideration by Nottingham City Council.
