Sales promoter gets 10 years jail for splashing hot water on a man with Down Syndrome

BALIK PULAU: A sales promoter was sentenced to 10 years in prison for splashing hot water on a man with Down Syndrome.

Sessions court judge Ahzal Fariz Ahmad Khairuddin sentenced Oo Saw Kee, 39, and fined her RM6,000 in default of 12 months jail, after she pleaded guilty to committing the offence.

Ahzal said when handing down his judgement that what Oo did was serious, cruel and inhumane, especially against a disabled person.

He said there was no provocation on the part of the victim during this incident.

“In this case, the court needs to take into consideration the public interest rather than personal interest of the accused,” he said at the Balik Pulau court here on Tuesday (April 23).

Earlier, Oo pleaded guilty to intentionally inflicting serious injury on 33-year-old A. Solairaj by splashing hot water on him which caused burns at 9.24am on April 19.

The incident happened inside a lift of an apartment at Jalan Rajawali, Bayan Lepas.

She was charged under Section 326 of the Penal Code, which is punishable by a prison sentence of up to 20 years and subject to a fine or whipping as well, upon conviction.

Lawyer Edric Loo represented Oo pro bono.

While Deputy Public Prosecutor Mohd Noordin Ismail prosecuted the case.

It was reported on Friday (April 20) night that police detained a woman who allegedly splashed hot water on a man with Down Syndrome in an apartment elevator, here.

Southwest acting police chief Deputy Superintendent Jafri Md Zain said the 39-year-old suspect was detained at 9.21pm in the apartment grounds.

“The woman resides in the apartment area and she was remanded today (April 20) to facilitate investigations into the incident,” he said.

The incident happened when the 33-year-old victim was returning to his apartment home on the 16th floor.

The victim was taken to Penang Hospital and medical officers later confirmed that the victim suffered burns on the front and back of his right side due to exposure to hot water.

He was reported to be in stable condition.

A 20-second video of the incident also went viral on social media, with social media users condemning the woman’s actions.
