Filipinas lose to Slovenia to wrap up Pinatar Cup bid

The Philippine women’s football team absorbed a 1-0 loss to Slovenia on Tuesday (Wednesday Manila time) to finish its campaign in the Pinatar Cup held in Murcia, Spain.

A conceded goal five minutes into the match courtesy of Slovenia’s Lana Golob forced the Filipinas to go home winless after two matches in the pocket tournament which they participated for the second straight year.

In their first match, the team of coach Mark Torcaso fell 2-0 to Scotland. The tournament held a knockout-style format to determine the winner.

Finland prevailed in the final over Scotland, 5-4, on penalties after extra time ended up tied at 1-1.

It was Finland that dealt the Philippines a 4-0 drubbing in a friendly held before the Pinatar Cup.

The Spain trip served as a chance to field in new players, namely Camille Sahirul, Katana Norman and Asian Cup-bound Filipinas U-17 member Alexa Pino.

Far Eastern University standout Dionesa Tolentin also saw action, marking her first national team cap since 2019.
