Russia-Ukraine war: Frontline update as of April 23

In Ukraine, 86 combat engagements took place in the frontline over the last day. Russia significantly intensified assaults in the Donetsk region, according to Ukrainian Armed Forces General Staff.

Russian attacks

In total, Russia launched 6 missile and 77 air strikes, fired about 100 times from multiple launch rocket systems at the positions of Ukrainian troops and settlements.

At night, the Russian troops attacked Ukraine once again, using 16 Shahed UAVs. Ukrainian Air Defense Forces destroyed 15 of these attack UAVs.

Over the past day, the following localities were hit by Russian air strikes:

・Zolochiv, Vovchansk, Prykolotne, Derhachi, Senkove in Kharkiv region;

・Bilohorivka, Luhansk region;

・Siversk, Spirne, Ivanivske, New York, Novokalynove, Berdychi, Oleksandropil, Semenivka, Illinka, Netailove, Karlivka, Vodiane, Kostiantynivka, Novomykhailivka, Urozhaine, Staromaiorske, Donetsk region;

・Orikhiv, Mala Tokmachka, Zaporizhzhia region;

・Novoberyslav, Beryslav, Chervonyi Maiak, Kherson region.

Over 120 settlements in Chernihiv, Sumy, Kharkiv, Luhansk, Donetsk, Zaporizhzhia, Dnipro, Kherson, and Mykolaiv regions were under Russian artillery fire.

Situation at frontlines

The operational situation remains unchanged in the Volyn and Polissia directions.

In the Siversk and Slobozhanske directions, Russia maintains a military presence in the border areas, conducts sabotage activities to prevent the deployment of Ukrainian troops to threatened areas, and increases the density of minefields along the state border.

Russian troops did not conduct offensive (assault) actions in the Kupiansk direction.

In the Lyman direction, Russians conducted 19 attacks in the areas of Serebrianske forestry and the settlements of Nadiia, Novoyehorivka in the Luhansk region, and Terny and Torske in the Donetsk region.

In the Bakhmut direction, Ukrainian troops repelled 16 Russian attacks near Zolotarivka, Spirne, Vyimka, Chasiv Yar, Ivanivske, Klishchiivka, and Andriivka in the Donetsk region.

In the Avdiivka direction, Ukrainian troops repelled 18 Russian attacks near Novobakhmutivka, Semenivka, Umanske, Keramik, Berdychi, Pervomaiske, Ocheretyne, Novokalynove, Yasnobrodivka and Netailove in Donetsk region.

In the Novopavlivka direction, Ukrainian troops continue to hold back Russians in the areas of Heorhiivka, Novomykhailivka, Vodiane, Mykilske, and Urozhaine in the Donetsk region, where the enemy tried to break through the defense of Ukrainian troops over 20 times.

In the Orikhiv direction, Russians attacked the positions of Ukrainian defenders 3 times near Staromaiorske in the Donetsk region and Robotyne in Zaporizhzhia.

In the Kherson direction, Russians have not abandoned their intention to drive Ukrainian units from the footholds on the left bank of the Dnipro River. Thus, over the past day, Russian troops made 7 unsuccessful attacks on the positions of Ukrainian troops.

Russian losses in war against Ukraine

Over the past day, the aviation of the Ukrainian Defense Forces struck 2 anti-aircraft missile systems and 16 areas of concentration of Russian personnel, weapons, and military equipment.

The missile troops struck 1 control center, 2 air defense facilities, and 1 area of concentration of Russian occupants’ personnel.

According to ISW, the Ukrainian Defense Forces are holding back the Russian troops near Chasiv Yar, but Russia has advanced near Avdiivka.

Russia is preparing an offensive in the Donetsk region, but Western assistance may disrupt these plans.

Meanwhile, last night, Russians attacked Odesa with attack drones. Buildings were damaged and a fire broke out in the city, with many casualties.
