Rotten Tomatoes Score Revealed for Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes
The debut score has been unveiled for 20th Century Studios’ Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes. Ahead of its wide release in theaters, early reviews for the latest entry in the Planet of the Apes reboot series have landed the movie an impressive fresh score of 86 percent on Rotten Tomatoes.
Per Rotten Tomatoes, 56 reviews have so far been counted for Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes. The vast majority of the reviews are positive, with many praising the visual effects and how the sequel continues the narrative established in the previous trilogy. Helen O’Hara of Empire noted that Kingdom is “less action-heavy than the last trilogy and inevitably more ape-centric, but this is a promisingly chewy start for the latest series of simian thrillers.”

Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes is more than a mouthful; it’s an action-packed adventure full of anthropomorphic apes struggling to find meaning. Close
In her review for Beyond the Trailer, Grace Randolph called Kingdom the “best Planet of the Apes movie since the 1968 original.” She added that the Wes Ball-directed sequel is “an intimate, more emotional story that still has epic moments” and is definitely “worth seeing.” Another review from Richard Lawson of Vanity Fair stated that Kingdom is “another worthy installment” in the Planet of the Apes series even if the movie “doesn’t reach the rattling grandeur of [Matt Reeves’] Dawn [of the Planet of the Apes].”
However, not every review was positive, with Caryn James of BBC.com writing that the movie was “the definition of generic” despite boasting “impressive CGI.” The Film Verdict’s Alonso Duralde shared James’ criticisms, calling Kingdom an “intermittently entertaining but ultimately fruitless exercise in franchise expansion.”
Reviews Won’t Stop Kingdom From Conquering the Box Office
Even if more negative reviews are released, it likely won’t impact Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes’ opening box office weekend too much. Audience demand remains at an all-time high for the Planet of the Apes franchise, with Kingdom currently tracking for an opening weekend between $54 million and $61 million at the domestic box office. The movie is also expected to earn an additional $80-90 million from international markets.
