Rory McIlroy
Ever since the conclusion of the Masters, rumors have been spiraling about top PGA Tour star Rory McIlroy potentially departing to join LIV Golf. But on Tuesday, McIlroy addressed all the rumors, sending a clear message about his future in golf and where his alliance lies.
Previous reports suggested that McIlroy was “close” to completing a deal with LIV Golf that would have netted him $850 million along with equity in the Saudi-backed golf league.
McIlroy was asked about this report in a conversation with Golf Channel anchor Todd Lewis, which he immediately called false and proclaimed that his future will remain on the PGA Tour for years to come.
“I honestly don’t know how these things get started,” said McIlroy. “I’ve never been offered a number from LIV. And I’ve never contemplated going to LIV. I think I’ve made it clear over the last two years that I don’t think it’s something for me. Doesn’t mean that I judge people who have gone and played over there.
“Personally for me, my future is here on the PGA Tour. It’s never gonna be any different. I’m obviously here to play this PGA Tour event this week. And I will play the PGA Tour for the rest of my career.”
As McIlroy stated in the interview, he has definitely made it clear over and over again in recent months that while he respects the talent on LIV Golf, it simply isn’t for him.
That’s what made the initial report of him potentially joining LIV so jarring. But it sure sounds like he has no plans whatsoever of jumping ship to LIV, which should make the loyal supporters of the PGA Tour quite happy to hear.
