Clean up, deep well operators told

BAGUIO CITY, Philippines — Deep well operators in this city have until today to comply with an order issued by the sanitation division of the City Health Services Office.

Roberto Bruce Colewan, officer-in-charge of the ciy’s sanitation division, said the order issued as early as Jan. 31 requires all deep well operators to comply with the recommended corrective measures.

The same order mandates these operators to improve the sanitation standard at their work stations to ensure water safety.

Deep well operators were required to provide their workers personal protective equipment such as hair nets, rubber gloves and boots, as well as uniforms for proper identification.

They were told to prevent delivery trucks with no business permits from drawing water from the well.

During a stakeholders’ consultation, it was ageed that water delivery firms that have no business permits would be issued notices of violation.

Legitimate firms that draw water from unregistered sources will be penalized by cancellation of their permits.

Deep well operators were required to submit a list of delivery trucks they are serving, including the names, addresses and contact numbers of the owners for monitoring purposes.

The order was in line with a memorandum signed by Mayor Benjamin Magalong on Jan. 30, requiring the local drinking water quality monitoring task force to conduct an inventory on water delivery trucks and assessment of their compliance with water quality policies.
