Rio Ferdinand hailed Jadon Sancho for proving a point to Manchester United after helping Borussia Dortmund reach the Champions League semi-finals.

Sancho left Old Trafford to rejoin Dortmund during the January transfer window having been banished from the first-team by Erik ten Hag.

Since returning to Germany, the winger has scored just two goals in 17 appearances but his recent performances, particularly in Europe, have won praise.

Sancho scored in the Champions League round of 16 tie against PSV Eindhoven and helped his side in their fightback against Atletico Madrid to reach the semi-finals on Tuesday.

Trailing 2-1 from the first leg, Dortmund sealed a thrilling 4-2 win, progressing 5-4 on aggregate, with former United defender Ferdinand impressed with his turnaround.

‘We asked for Sancho to put in a performance, a lot to prove and he’s showing it,’ said Ferdinand on TNT Sports at full-time.

‘He’s left Manchester United under a cloud, he’s now in a Champions League semi-final against PSG. Who could have written that script? He wouldn’t have seen that coming.’

Sancho played just three times for United before being exiled from the squad in early September. Ten Hag dropped the Londoner from his squad for a game against Arsenal, later revealing his disappointing performances levels in training had to led to the axe.

A furious Sancho hit back, effectively labelling his manager a liar and insisting he had been made a ‘scapegoat’.

Sancho was ordered to train away from the squad as a result, banned from all first-team facilities having refused to publicly apologise for his comments.

United attempted to find a permanent move for the winger in January before eventually agreeing to a loan deal.

While Dortmund are thought to be interested in re-signing him on a permanent basis, reports this week have suggested he could yet have a future back in Manchester if ten Hag is sacked at the end of the season.
