A forecaster has predicted exactly when “one of the biggest snow events we have seen in years” will batter the UK – and Scotland won’t be let off lightly.

Brits have battled ice-cold conditions all week, but it seems the low temperatures aren’t going away just yet. Snow and ice is predicted across much of the country and the Met Office has issued yellow weather warnings for today and tomorrow (January 14-15).

Edinburgh has been hit by a weather warning for snow and ice on Tuesday.

But James Madden of Exacta Weather reckons the new warning is only the beginning. He said: “Our last snow update also provided details of a big snow event from the north from Tuesday and into Wednesday of next week and this is still very much the case, reports the Daily Star.

“It is also worth noting at this point that most and if not all parts of Scotland will have seen snow by around this point of the week and even to lower levels in lower regions such as Glasgow, Edinburgh and Ayrshire.

“Throughout Tuesday and on Wednesday will see these heavy snow showers working slowly southwards across the country and having already caused a whiteout in Scotland, it will then go on to leave a blanket of snow in its wake and heavy snow showers across large parts of northern England, north-east, and the Yorkshire/Humber regions.”

Madden added there could be “large-scale disruption” as snow settles on the ground in Scotland, Cumbria, Northumberland, Teesside, Lancashire, Merseyside, Cheshire and parts of Yorkshire and Humber. Parts of Wales, Northern Ireland and the Midlands can also expect to see snow.

Madden predicts flakes could be spotted as far south as London, although he stressed it was unclear at this point whether the white stuff would reach the capital and other parts of the south. He added: “On current indications, this looks like it could be one of the biggest snow events we have seen in years developing within this period.”

And it’s not just Tuesday and Wednesday we need to watch out for. Madden wrote Thursday and Friday will see “snow showers becoming a bit more sporadic but continuing to filter in across the country, particularly, in parts to the west of the United Kingdom and Northern Ireland/Ireland.”

It comes after the Met Office separate blasts could bring “potentially disruptive snow” nationwide. Aside from a large band bringing inclement weather to Scotland and Northern Ireland, “a weather system may move across northern and central parts of the UK bringing some potentially disruptive snow” by Tuesday.

A third weather system could bring snow to southern and central parts of England on Wednesday.
