Emmys: How to watch the historic 75th ceremony and why 2023 awards are on this year

It’s weird for the Emmys to be in January.

For most of the ceremony’s 70-plus years of existence, the celebration of TV takes place in mid-September — right before the US fall television season starts.

But all that’s different this year.

Here’s how to catch the 75th Emmy Awards and why we’re watching the 2023 Emmys in 2024.

When are the Emmys?

The 75th Emmys ceremony will take place at 8pm US ET on Monday, January 15.

For those in Australia, that will be midday AEDT on Tuesday, January 16.

Of course, if you’re more into the awards for the fashion, red carpet arrivals start at 9am on Tuesday.

How can I watch the Emmys in Australia?

The Emmys will be broadcast live from 10am AEST, January 16 on Foxtel and on streaming service Binge.

ABC News will also be live blogging the whole event.

Wait, why are we watching the 2023 Emmys in 2024?

We’ve been waiting a long time to see these Emmys. The nominations came out in June last year, back when we thought the ceremony would be on track for September 18.

But then the SAG-AFTRA and writers’ strikes happened.

As such, a massive majority of Hollywood’s actors and writers were busy picketing for better conditions between May and November last year.

This forced the Emmys to postpone the event for the first time since 2001 when the ceremony was moved to November due to the 9/11 terrorist attacks.

‘Cause let’s face it, an Emmy’s without actors and writers would be pretty dull.

Just ask the Tonys, who powered on with their 2023 ceremony despite striking writers — but at least they had elaborate musical numbers to pad for time.

The shifting of the ceremony five months ahead does throw up some unique situations.

For example, the eligibility requirement is any program that aired between June 1, 2022 and May 31, 2023, this means that all the nominations for The Bear are for its first season — not the recently aired second season which swept last week’s Golden Globes.

Who’s hosting the Emmys this year?

Taking on hosting duties this year will be actor and comedian Anthony Anderson.

You might know him from his lead role on long-running sitcom Black-ish and its spin offs Mixed-ish and Grown-ish.

He’s also had numerous supporting parts over the years in films like Me, Myself & Irene, Barbershop, The Departed and Transformers.

Despite the daunting task, Anderson is keen to take on the challenge.

“When FOX asked me to host this historic telecast, I was over the moon that Taylor Swift was unavailable, and now I can’t wait to be part of the biggest night in television,” he said in a statement.

Lucky for Anderson, Jo Koy’s performance as the Golden Globes host last week has set an extremely low bar.

Who’s presenting at this year’s Emmys?

Who are the frontrunners in this year’s Emmys?

Thanks to the date shift, this year’s Emmys are after the Golden Globes, which also celebrate accomplishments in television.

Which means last week’s Globes winners can give us an insight into how the Emmys might play out.

It would be simply unthinkable for Succession to walk away without at least a couple awards.

The show had an astounding fourth and final season last year, has the most Emmy nominations at 27 AND picked up four Golden Globes last week — including an acting nod for Aussie Sarah Snook.

But don’t discount The Last of Us, the fungi-infused horror drama might have missed out on big gongs at the Golden Globes but they’re up for 24 Emmys, including Lead Actor and Lead Actress nominations for Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey.

Add the fact that Nick Offerman picked up a Creative Arts Emmys Outstanding Guest Actor in a Drama Series for his heartbreaking work in The Last of Us episode Long, Long Time and it could signal that voters at the Emmys are actually quite keen on mushrooms.

Keep an eye out also for The White Lotus, you might have to dig in your brain a bit cause the series’ second season came out all the way back in October 2022.

Recency bias might keep The White Lotus from making much of an impact but the show has a huge 23 nominations, including five cast members up for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series and four in the running for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama Series.

Who were winners at the Creative Arts Emmys?

Last weekend the Television Academy held two Creative Arts Emmy ceremonies to give out the awards that can’t be squished into the main broadcast (no-one likes a 6-hour long awards ceremony).

In addition to Offerman’s win, The Last of Us also scored Outstanding Guest Actress in a Drama Series going to young up-and-comer Storm Reid.

Netflix’s I Think You Should Leave, with Tim Robinson, won two awards for Best Short Form Comedy Series and an acting award for Robinson — possibly the one bright spot for the omnipresent streamer at this year’s Emmys.

Rob McElhenney and Ryan Renyolds’ underdog sports documentary series Welcome to Wrexham swept the Reality Program categories, hoovering up five awards.

Even former US president Barack Obama took home a statuette for Outstanding Narrator on Working: What We Do All Day.
