Red Sox acquire 1B in trade with Cubs
As the Boston Red Sox prepared to take on the Chicago Cubs on Saturday, the two teams worked out a trade that will send first baseman and outfielder Garrett Cooper, according to Chris Cotillo.
Cooper, 33, was originally drafted by the Milwaukee Brewers in the sixth round of the 2013 draft. He made his MLB debut with the New York Yankees and also spent time with the Miami Marlins and San Diego Padres.
Before being designated for assignment earlier in the week, Cooper had hit .270 with a home run, six RBIs and .774 OPS in 12 appearances this season.
The Red Sox could use an experienced first baseman with an average bat since Triston Casas is dealing with a rib injury that is set to keep him out indefinitely, and they really can’t be sending Bobby Dalbec (hitting .093) to the plate every night.
In return, Boston will send Chicago cash.
