Radio Station Wave 89.1 Bids Farewell

Wave 89.1, the radio station whose programming championed mostly rap, urban, hip-hop and R&B music, is officially signing off.

In a statement on its Facebook page posted on Monday (April 15), the FM radio station said “the end is here.”

“While our heart is being pinched, we want to officially announce that Wave 89.1 has made its final broadcast,” the station said. “Thanks to all the former DJs, managers, directors, techs, guests, and anyone who has ever set foot in our studio.

“You helped us make history,” it added.

The station is reportedly being taken over by Adventist Media and will henceforth broadcast religious content.

The radio station with the call letters DWAV, broadcasting on the FM band, has its roots in 1975, when it first aired as KB 89.1 and played easy listening music. It was owned by the government broadcasting station Intercontinental Broadcasting Corporation (IBC). In the late 1980s, it rebranded into 89 DMZ and changed its call letters to DZMZ-FM. In this reincarnation, the station played mostly dance, hip-hop, and remixes.

In 2001, the station underwent another overhaul when it fell into the hands of the Vera Family, whose outfit was later named Tiger 22 Media Corp. The other FM radio stations under the group includes Jam 88.3, Magic 89.9, and 99.5 Play FM.

“So many memories. Good times and bad. Laughter and tears. WE CHANGED THE GAME. No one can say otherwise,” the station said in the statement.

In the Facebook post, tributes poured from loyal listeners after the station asked listeners to share stories about Wave 89.1.

“This is truly sad. Wave 89.1 has been my home for some time, its music were my lullabies through heartbreaks and bliss, colleagues and Sir Joe D’ Mango were a pleasure to work with,” said one.

“90s and early 2000s teens like us will always remember you. Especially at night, you were our lullabies,” said another.

In 2021, 103.5 KLite announced that it was parting ways with its staff and DJs. Of course, one of the most touching farewells happened when rock radio station NU107 signed off for the final time in 2010.
