Radio legend dies aged 79 as stars pay tribute - 'He was an inspiration'

Radio legend Wally Scott has died aged 79, with friend and fellow broadcaster Billy Butler leading heartbroken tributes. Wally Scott was a well-known radio host, particularly in Merseyside, where he was recognised for his participation in the radio quiz show ‘Hold Your Plums’, with DJ Billy Butler.

The best pals and broadcaster also had their own show called the ‘Billy and Wally Show’. Billy posted an emotional tribute to his longtime friend and colleague on social media.

He said: “It is with deep regret and much sadness that I have to announce the passing of my close friend and colleague Wally Scott who passed away peacefully yesterday morning after a very long illness.”

“Wally was my friend and work mate for over 40 years on radio and TV he had careers in journalism with one of Liverpool’s biggest news agency’s he also worked on Radio City, Radio Merseyside, Magic FM and briefly on Liverpool Live with me. He was an inspiration to work with and a huge influence on my career.”

He continued: “Our bond ran deep – we never had a cross word and we had the best chemistry together always laughing. And as well as our radio shows we did over 60 Billy and Wally TV shows together and 58 sold out Pontins shows as well as many theatre shows at the Empire, Floral Pavilion, Philharmonic and not forgetting our pantomimes together, where Wally would live in fear of my antics!.

“I am so grateful for having met him and having him in my life and I will miss him so dearly. Sleep well Wally. Condolences to his life long partner Val.”

Popular duo Billy and Wally frequently performed at Pontins holiday camp in pantomimes together. The star also had a successful solo career, appearing on shows such as The Comedians and Opportunity Knocks.

Tributes have poured in for Wally online with fans sharing their fondest memories of the funny-man. One fan wrote: “So sad -my mum and dad roared with laughter listening to “Hold Your Plums” back in the day. I would lie in bed awake Sunday morning wondering what the hell they were laughing so loudly at. They turned up the radio -so I could hear it upstairs -and yes I joined them in uproar. Sorry for your loss Billy and condolences to Wally friends and family.”

A second penned: “Oh no! ! ! So sorry to hear this. He was a lovely man and has secured his place in Liverpool’s history. Sad news. Rock In Peace Wally.”

While a third added: “Such sad news, I’m sorry for your loss Billy Butler. I will always have such fond memories of doing the Pontins Shows with you both back in the day, and Pantos at the Floral of course…such good times. RIP Wally Scott.”
