A silver canister containing toxic waste has washed up on a popular beach in Queensland, prompting an urgent warning for beach-goers.
The canister was found while water police were conducting patrols off Curtis Island near Cape Capricorn in Gladstone on Wednesday.
The discovery prompted police to issue a statement warning people not to pick up any canisters while spending time at the beach.

'Do not attempt to move or open these canisters,' the statement read.
'The canister is described as approximately 30cm long and 15cm in diameter, and contains a toxic chemical, which could be harmful if handled.
'It has subsequently been removed.'
Anyone who spots a silver canister or a similar container should call triple zero.
