Queensland police recruits offered $20,000 HECS relief

Hundreds of police recruits will get $20,000 knocked off their HECS debt in Queensland.

Police Minister Mark Ryan said in a release earlier today that there had been a 200 per cent increase in applicants since a major recruitment drive kicked off last year.

That translates to more than 2000 applicants in the pipeline, with a record number of trainees already in Queensland Police academies.

Queensland police recruits will be eligible for $20,000 of HECS relief.

And 400 successful applicants with degrees in areas such as criminology, social work, counselling, or other relevant human services will get up to $20,000 paid off their HECS debt.

“These incentives to attract new recruits are providing significant support to the Queensland Police Service’s recruiting efforts,” Ryan said.

“There are 20,000 reasons for university graduates with specified degrees to consider a career with the Queensland Police Service.

“We are putting the call out to everyone who has a relevant degree to consider a challenging and rewarding career with Queensland Police.”

Police applicants in the pipeline have more than doubled since this time last year with 960 in the pipeline in April 2023 compared with 2079 in April 2024.

There are currently 687 recruits training in QPS Academies.
