Borussia Dortmund chief Hans-Joachim Watzke has come to Bayern Munich’s defence after Dean Saunders slammed Sadio Mane for his Liverpool exit.
Following six stellar years of service at Anfield, Senegal international Mane has gone after a new challenge. The 30-year-old feels he will prove a fine addition at Bayern, with club chiefs reciprocating that sentiment.
Mane leaves Liverpool after 120 goals and a last campaign in which they came closer to a quadruple than any team before them. He adapted to Jurgen Klopp’s signing of Luis Diaz, maintaining his top form through the middle of the attack rather than the left.
As such, former Liverpool star Saunders recently hit out at Mane for his decision.
Saunders claimed that Mane will “coast” at Bayern in “third gear” and will never play in a better front three than at Liverpool.
Dortmund CEO Watzke has now hit back, though, coming to the defence of his Bundesliga rivals.
“There are always some arrogant idiots like this one,” Watzke told Bild in response to Saunders’ comments.
“As a member of the board of Europe’s club association ECA, I know that German football still has a good reputation.
“The English didn’t win any of the three European Cup titles in the past season!”
Liverpool have reached the Champions League final in three of the past five seasons, winning on one occasion.
Bayern, meanwhile, won the competition in 2020 but lost out to Villarreal in the quarter-finals last season.
Bayern have a firm grip on the Bundesliga title, while Liverpool have narrowly lost out on the Premier League title to Manchester City on two recent occasions.
Mane will add Bayern quality

Mane will add undoubted quality to both Bayern and the Bundesliga.
His three-year contract could see him link up with Robert Lewandowski in his first year – if the Poland star does not leave for Barcelona.
Thereafter, Mane will no doubt hope to fire Bayern to Bundesliga and Champions League triumphs.
He was in the final year of his Anfield contract, but his agent has denied that the move was about wages.
Mane has also insisted that the transfer was about nothing more than the new challenge. The Senegal star has earned the move and has left Anfield on good terms.
