Pleurisy is an inflammation of the tissue between lungs and the ribcage (pleura). The most common symptom of pleurisy is a sharp chest pain when you breathe. Sometimes the pain is also felt in the shoulder, and the pain becomes worse when you cough, sneeze or move around, and it may be relieved by taking shallow breaths. There are several causes for developing pleurisy like a viral infection, bacterial infection, any injuries involving the ribcage, pulmonary embolism, sickle cell anemia, radiotherapy and chemotherapy, HIV or AIDS, mesothelioma and lung cancer, autoimmune diseases like rheumatoid arthritis and lupus. Treatment of pleurisy usually involves relieving the pain and treating the underlying cause of the condition. The duration of pleurisy depends upon the condition causing it, and how early it has diagnosed.
