The length of stay of a septicemic patient is extremely variable, as their recovery depends on age (younger patients, in general, recover faster), physiological reserve (previously healthy patients also tend to recover faster), primary focus of infection (patients with sepsis resulting from urinary tract infection, for example, tend to have a milder condition than patients with foci such as the lung or central nervous system, for example) and severity of the current condition.

Sepsis is a serious complication of infection. With prompt treatment, multiorgan failure and even death due to sepsis can be prevented. The time taken for complete recovery after sepsis depends on the severity of sepsis, overall health condition of the individual and how early sepsis was identified. This may range from a few days to weeks, may even last for months in severe infections.
