powell takes over in 4th quarter, rallies no. 19 lady vols past no. 22 sooners 76-73

FORT MYERS, Fla. (AP) — Jasmine Powell came off the bench to score 13 of her 19 points in the fourth quarter and No. 19 Tennessee rallied past No. 22 Oklahoma 76-73 in the Fort Myers Tip-Off on Saturday.

Powell’s three-point play with 6:08 to play put the Lady Vols on top 61-59, their first lead since late in the first quarter. Destiny Wells scored the next five points for Tennessee and then Powell scored the last 10 points, including a pair of clutch 3s.

Powell’s 3 at the shot-clock buzzer made it 71-64 with 2:05 to play. The Sooners clawed back within two before she drilled another with 21 seconds remaining.

Powell was 4 for 4 from the field and 3 for 3 from the line in the last 10 minutes.

Jewel Spear scored 16 points for Tennessee (4-2) and Sara Puckett had 13 with eight rebounds.

Sahara Williams scored 16 points and grabbed eight rebounds for the Sooners (5-2). Lexy Keys and Aubrey Joens added 12 apiece.

Tennessee lost to No. 21 Indiana and Oklahoma fell to Princeton in their tournament openers.

The Sooners scored the last six points of the opening quarter to lead 20-18. Williams had a layup and a 3-pointer sandwiched around a 3 from Keys to give Oklahoma a 33-29 lead three minutes before halftime. Williams’ layup at the buzzer made it 38-32 at the break.

A layup by Joens had the Sooners up 50-40 four minutes into the second half but the Lady Vols went on a 13-3 run to tie it with three-seconds left in the third quarter. However, Joens drilled 3-pointer from the right wing at the buzzer for a 56-53 Sooners lead.

Tennessee plays host to No. 17 Notre Dame in the ACC-SEC Challenge on Wednesday. Grambling visits Oklahoma on Friday.
