popular brewery closes in melbourne's south-east

National weather forecast for Wednesday May 8

A popular brewery in Melbourne’s south-east has announced it will close its doors for good after more than a decade in business.

Award-winning craft brewery Deeds Brewing revealed they had made the “difficult decision” to wind up the business after entering into voluntary administration eight weeks ago.

The business said they were “heartbroken” after failing to secure a buyer or investor.

The Victorian-based outfit called in administrators weeks ago, according to ASIC records, for four companies that make up the business: Deeds Group Pty Ltd, Deeds Brewing Company Pty Ltd, Future Proof Distilling Pty Ltd and Deeds Taproom Pty Ltd.

Established in 2012 as Quiet Deeds by university friends Patrick Alé and David Milstein, Deeds opened its brewery in the eastern Melbourne suburb of Glen Iris in 2019 before adding a taproom and kitchen to the venue.

“We have a very sad announcement for you all. We have made the difficult decision to wind up our business,” the business said on social media,” the brewery posted on Facebook.

“Over the last 12 years, we’ve poured our hearts into every brew, every interaction, and every moment shared with you.

“Since launching Deeds Brewing in 2012, our mission has always been about passion and people.

“We’ll deeply miss our dedicated staff, who have become like family to us, and our incredible fans who’ve stood by us through thick and thin throughout the years. We want to thank you for all the love and support you have shown us.”

The brewery previously won champion medium brewery and champion Victorian brewery at last year’s Australian International Beer Awards.

It also took home medals for 12 of its various beers.

Deeds Brewery will be trading for the next few days and is offering customers a 30 per cent discount.

“This will be your last chance to stock up on our beers and raise a final glass to Deeds Brewing,” the company said.

This year alone has seen independent breweries Wayward, Big Shed, Hawkers and Golden West all go into administration, while the likes of Ballistic, Parched, Wicked Elf and Running With Thieves suffered the same fate in 2023.
