Sassuolo relegated following defeat by Cagliari
Sassuolo were relegated on Sunday following a 2-0 defeat by Cagliari and after other results also went against them, ending 11 consecutive seasons in Serie A.
The club will join Salernitana in the second tier Serie B next season with the last relegation spot to be determined after the final day of the season on May 26. Sassuolo are 19th with 29 points, five points adrift of the safety zone with only one match remaining.
Sassuolo needed to beat Claudio Ranieri's side to maintain their slim chances of avoiding the drop. By beating Sassuolo, 14th-placed Cagliari guaranteed themselves another season in the Italian top flight as they moved up to 36 points. They are three points above 18th-place Empoli, who are also in the danger zone with 33 points following a 1-1 draw with Udinese.
Frosinone, a fellow relegation contender, secured a 1-0 win at Monza to seal Sassuolo's fate. Fifteenth-placed Frosinone are still not out of danger as they are on 35 points and could be overtaken by teams below them in the standings if they do not beat Udinese on the final day of the season.
