Pokmon Adventures: Blue's 8 Best Pokmon From the Manga

The Pokémon Adventures manga offers fans an exciting new take on this iconic world, and the rival Blue is once again one of the story’s key characters. The rival of the fan-favorite protagonist Red, Blue has trained a diverse and powerful group of Pokémon since the start of his quest in the Kanto region.

Though he hasn’t decisively surpassed his rival, Blue remains one of the strongest trainers to appear in the series. Some of his Pokémon have grown traveling across different regions, with teammates like Scyther and Rhydon evolving into even more capable battlers. Blue’s team is a force to be reckoned with, from his classic starter Charizard to his Superpower Pokémon, Machamp.

Pidgeot is A Member of Blue’s Original Team

First appearance:

Chapter 18 (as Pidgeot)

Type:

Normal/Flying-Type

Level:

76

Known moves include:

Wing Attack, Feather Dance

The Pidgey evolutionary line is the first to start the “regional bird Pokémon” trend in the mainline games. The family and Pidgeot, especially, are among the franchise’s most popular birds, but that hasn’t translated much into Blue’s team in Pokémon Adventures.

Red’s 10 Best Pokmon From the Pokmon Adventures Manga

All Pokmon fans are likely aware of Ash Ketchum and Pikachu, but not all of them may know his inspiration, Reda master trainer with strong Pokmon.

Pidgeot sits in an awkward place on the team, as Pidgeot is a strong teammate trained to an impressive level — only two behind Porygon2 — but it happens “off-screen.” Pidgeot is one of the elite trainer’s original teammates and helps Blue out of battle during their conflict with Agatha. Agatha cuts off the heroes’ means of communication outside the villains’ headquarters on Cerise Island, leading to Pidgeot flying to relay messages to Professor Oak.

Porygon2 Was a Key Player in the FireRed & LeafGreen Arc

First appearance:

Chapter 18 (as Porygon), Chapter 160 (as Porygon2)

Type:

Normal-Type

Level:

78

Known moves include:

Psybeam, Conversion, Tri Attack, Zap Cannon, Conversion 2, Sharpen, Recycle

Porygon2 is a more prominent member of Blue’s team than Pokémon like Ninetales and Pidgeot, but less than its teammates like Charizard or Golduck. Porygon2 has its own interesting gimmick, as the digital Pokémon can move through cyberspace. Chapter 18 of Pokémon Adventures reveals that Blue bought it as a Porygon from Team Rocket’s gambling Game Corner. It’s another nod to the Generation I video games, as players can purchase a Porygon from the Game Corner for an astonishing 9,999 coins in Pokémon Red and Yellow and 6,500 in Blue.

The Normal-Type Porygon was a terrific counter against Agatha’s Gengar, using its innate Conversion Ability to turn into a Ghost-Type and eventually finish it off with Psybeam. The artificial Pokémon evolved in Chapter 160 and became pivotal in the FireRed & LeafGreen arc. Porygon2 helps Blue and Red thwart Team Rocket’s latest schemes, infiltrating their Trainer Tower’s computer system and defeating it from the inside.

Ninetales Battled Against Red and the Elite Four’s Agatha

First appearance:

Chapter 18 (as Ninetales)

Type:

Fire-Type

Level:

68

Known moves include:

Flamethrower, Fire Spin, Fire Blast

In the mixup between Blue and Red’s traded teams in Chapter 18, the pair caught the troublesome Ninetales together. Blue ultimately had a claim over Red to keep him, making much more limited appearances when compared to the former’s staple team. Still, the Fire-type Ninetales participated in two important battles in Pokémon Adventures’ earlier storylines.

Ninetales battled against Red in Blue’s close loss against his rival in the League Final, later battling against Agatha during the Yellow arc. Most recently in the Gold, Silver & Crystal arc’s final chapter — and 180th chapter overall — Blue’s Ninetales is known to be at Lv. 68 and knows the attacks Flamethrower, Fire Spin, and Fire Blast.

Golduck Has Useful Psychic Abilities

First appearance:

Chapter 118 (as Golduck)

Type:

Water-Type

Level:

88

Known moves include:

Surf, Confusion, Hyrdro Pump, Hyper Beam, Tail Whip, Iron Tail, Dig

Obtained as a Psyduck off-screen and debuting in Chapter 18, Golduck filled an interesting niche in Blue’s team. Golduck was another Pokémon who was briefly and accidentally traded to Red, but grew to have a cheery personality in its three days with the trainer.

Despite not being a Psychic-type species, Golduck possesses unique Psychic abilities and helps both Blue and Red in and out of battles. Golduck is also Blue’s go-to Surf user to travel across open waters. In one of the most clever uses of Psychic traits in a Pokémon series, Golduck helps Blue see things otherwise invisible to him and relay messages without speaking by using the Pokédex as a conduit. In battles, the Yellow arc revealed in a flashback that Golduck played an important role in defeating Agatha’s Gengar and Arbok. Golduck is Blue’s second-highest level Pokémon (Lv. 88) behind Charizard (Lv. 89).

Rhyperior Helped Blue Beat a Gym Leader Solo as a Rhydon

First appearance:

Chapter 118 (as Rhydon), Chapter 449 (as Rhyperior)

Type:

Ground/Rock-Type

Level:

82

Known moves include:

Horn Attack, Stomp, Earth Power, Rock Wrecker, Earthquake, Dig, Megahorn

Which Legendary Pokmon Is Stronger: Palkia or Dialga?

Among all the Legendary Pokmon, those that hail from Diamond and Pearl are said to be two of the strongest, but which one reigns supreme?

Rhyperior is one of the later additions to Blue’s team in Pokémon Adventures, but it quickly becomes one of the squad’s star teammates. Blue captures Rhyperior as a Rhydon in Chapter 118, “Rock, Paper… Scizor,” and later uses it in an Indigo League preliminary round against the Gym Leader Chuck.

Blue trains Rhydon quickly to an impressively high level and defeats Chuck’s entire team by himself. This is even more impressive since Chuck is a Fighting-Type specialist, which inflicts super-effective damage against Rock-types like Rhydon. As a Rhyperior, it helped Blue and Silver when it was loaned out to Silver during the HeartGold & SoulSilver arc. In Chapter 449, “Raising the Stakes With Rhyperior,” it evolves by being traded while holding the Protector item. The Ground/Rock-Type even held its own against the Legendary Ghost/Dragon-Type Giratina to protect Silver’s father in the same storyline.

Machamp Gives The Team Immense Raw Power

First appearance:

Chapter 18 (as Machoke and Machamp)

Type:

Fighting-Type

Level:

80

Known moves include:

Submission, Slam, Karate Chop, Low Kick, Focus Energy, Seismic Toss, Hyper Beam

Machamp is one of the most memorable Fighting-Type Pokémon, and in the Adventures manga, it’s become one of Blue’s most physically powerful teammates. Interestingly never seen as a Machop (the evolutionary line’s first stage/species) Machamp makes its first appearance in the series as a Machoke in Chapter 18.

Machamp was among the Pokémon accidentally traded to Red in the same chapter and, ironically, evolved into a Machamp under Red’s care, mirroring the video game’s trade evolution method. With Red, it helped defeat a Ninetales, but it’s since returned to Blue’s team, it put up an intense fight in the Pokémon League Final. Machamp also features in the tense FireRed & LeafGreen rematch against Red, playing a key role in the hard-fought draw. Many of Machamp’s moves focus on Physical Attack, and it even learns Slam, which can’t be legitimately learned in the games.

Scizor Was Blue’s First Teammate as a Scyther

First appearance:

Chapter 18 (as Scyther), Chapter 115 (as Scizor)

Type:

Bug/Steel-Type

Level:

82

Known moves include:

Slash, Metal Claw, False Swipe, Steel Wing

Though Charmander was Blue’s formal starter, it wasn’t the first Pokémon he captured. Before his grandfather, Professor Oak, gifted him Charmander, he caught a Scyther and sent it to the Johto Gym Leader Chuck for intensive training. Scyther doesn’t appear until Chapter 18, “A Tale of Ninetales,” when Blue and Red accidentally trade each other’s Pokémon parties.

The Pokmon Trading Card Game is home to some extremely powerful cards, many of them inspired by the strongest Pokmon in the video games and anime.

Before it evolved, one of Scyther’s best outings was against the evil Elite Four member Agatha, defeating Gengar and Gastly, her powerful Ghost-types. Scyther also featured in battles against Red as a Scyther in the Pokémon League Final and a rematch during the FireRed & LeafGreen arc as the Steel/Bug-Type Scizor. Most recently, Blue’s Scizor flexed its strengths by overcoming X’s Pinsir during the X & Y arc and repelling the forces of Team Flare. Throughout Pokémon Adventures, Scizor’s greatest assets have been its powerful physical attacks.

Charizard is Blue’s Reliable Starter Pokmon

First appearance:

Chapter 1 (as Charmander), Chapter 5 (as Charmeleon), Chapter 27 (as Charizard)

Type:

Fire/Flying-Type

Level:

89

Known moves include:

Blast Burn, Reflect, Fly, Flamethrower, Fire Punch, Fire Spin

Fans normally expect Red to choose Charmander as his starter, but this time around, Blue picks up Charmander from Professor Oak. Eventually evolving into the iconic Fire-Type starter Pokémon Charizard, it developed into a staple of Blue’s team throughout his journey. Charizard’s first appearance as a Charmander came in Chapter 1, “A Glimpse of a Glow,” where Blue attempted to capture the elusive Mew.

Since then, Charizard’s highlights include defeating the villainous Gym Leader Koga and featuring in the razer-thin loss against Red in the Pokémon League Final. Red’s Venusar, Pikachu, and Poliwrath defeated it in a triple-team attack. But in the later Kanto arc Yellow, Charizard helped Blue and Yellow defeat the Elite Four’s leader Lance. In the X & Y arc, it even gained the ability to Mega Evolve into Mega Charizard Y and helped defeat Team Flare’s Xerosic.
