PKR grapples with succession at upcoming convention

SHAH ALAM – PKR faces a crucial juncture as it prepares for its upcoming convention, prompting calls for introspection and strategic planning to navigate future challenges, particularly in appealing to the growing Green Wave.

With the party’s special convention set for this Sunday, political analysts stressed the importance of a cohesive strategy to steer PKR’s trajectory.

Speaking to Sinar Daily, Singapore Institute of International Affairs senior fellow Dr Oh Ei Sun highlighted the necessity for PKR to develop a succession plan post-Anwar Ibrahim’s presidency.

“PKR must establish a clear succession plan beyond Anwar’s leadership and structure its organisational framework to mitigate internal power struggles,” he said.

Similarly, Universiti Teknologi Mara (UiTM) political analyst Dr Abdul Aziz Azizam highlighted the convention’s focus on acknowledging historical context.

“An integral part of the convention’s agenda is recognising historical context, enabling members to reflect on their journey and confront challenges,” Aziz said.

Given PKR’s diverse membership, fostering a shared understanding of core values and experiences is crucial for unity and coherence, he added.

“This emphasis on common ground will enable PKR to chart a path aligned with members’ aspirations and ideals,” Aziz added.

Highlighting the convention’s significance in commemorating PKR’s 25-year journey, Azizam emphasised the importance of understanding the party’s history in maintaining cohesion.

“Primarily, the convention serves as a platform to honour and acknowledge the perseverance and dedication that have defined PKR’s remarkable journey,” he noted.

Adding to the discussion, International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM) political analyst Associate Prof Dr Syaza Shukri identified three key areas likely to be addressed during the convention.

“I anticipate discussions on reform strategies, efforts to attract Malay voters for the upcoming General Election, and a clearer roadmap for succession planning.

“With Anwar assuming the role of Prime Minister, PKR must chart a clear direction for the future,” Shukri said.

Originally scheduled for April 28, PKR’s 25th-anniversary special convention has been rescheduled to this Sunday, April 21.

The convention, slated to be a full-day event, will feature a keynote address by Anwar.
