Pirates Of The Caribbean producer confirms new film will be a 'reboot'

A Pirates of the Caribbean producer has confirmed that the beloved Disney adventure franchise will be “rebooted”.

Jerry Bruckheimer was discussing the future of his hit franchises, which also includes Top Gun.

He shared: “It’s hard to tell. You don’t know. You really don’t know. You don’t know how they come together. You just don’t know.

“Because with Top Gun you have an actor who is iconic and brilliant. And how many movies he does before he does Top Gun; I can’t tell you.

“But we’re going to reboot Pirates, so that is easier to put together because you don’t have to wait for certain actors,” Bruckheimer told ComicBook.com.

Bruckheimer’s remarks suggest that the upcoming Pirates of the Caribbean instalment may introduce an entirely fresh cast, hinting at the absence of Johnny Depp’s return as Captain Jack Sparrow. The producer joined forces with Tom Cruise once again for 2022’s Top Gun: Maverick, marking a reunion more than 35 years after their collaboration on the original 1986 film.

Depp has headlined all five movies of the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise so far.

Originally Margot Robbie was attached to a female-led reboot, but confirmed in 2022 that Disney wasn’t moving forward with the project.

She told Vanity Fair at the time: “’We had an idea and we were developing it for a while, ages ago, to have more of a female-led—not totally female-led, but just a different kind of story—which we thought would’ve been really cool, but I guess they don’t want to do it.”

In 2020, Variety reported that Disney had begun developing the sixth installment in the original franchise, scripted by Craig Mazin and Ted Elliott, who co-wrote the initial four films.

Last year, Mazin said that the script for Pirates of the Caribbean 6 is so unconventional that he was surprised Disney approved it.

He told the Los Angeles Times: “We pitched it and thought there’s no way they’re buying it, it’s too weird. And they did!

“And then [we] wrote a fantastic script and the strike happened and everyone’s waiting around.”
