Pete Carroll’s 14-year stint as Seattle Seahawks head coach is over, with the long-serving boss set to take a back seat and move into an advisor role.

Carroll, who first took charge of the Seahawks back in 2010, has enjoyed a legendary stint in Seattle after guiding the franchise to its first ever Super Bowl back in 2013.

Yet after an underwhelming season which saw his team miss out on the NFL playoffs, the Seahawks have decided to end the 72-year-old’s lengthy reign as head coach and shift him into a new role upstairs.

Seattle Chair Jody Allen confirmed in a statement on Wednesday that Carroll will remain with the organization as an advisor from 2024 onwards, while paying tribute to his ‘expertise in leadership and building a championship culture’ over the years.

The statement reads: ‘After thoughtful meetings and careful consideration for the best interest of the franchise, we have amicably agreed with Pete Carroll that his role will evolve from Head Coach to remain with the organization as an advisor.

‘Pete is the winningest coach in Seahawks history, brought the city its first Super Bowl title, and created a tremendous impact over the past 14 years on the field and in the community.

‘His expertise in leadership and building a championship culture will continue as an integral part of our organization moving forward.

‘Pete will always be a beloved member of the Seahawks family.’

The Seahawks entered the final two weeks of the regular season with a chance of clinching a playoff spot for the 11th time under Carroll, only for a Week 17 loss against the Pittsburgh Steelers to leave them in need of help they failed to receive.

Seattle then closed the regular season with a 21-20 win at Arizona on Sunday to ensure their veteran coach went out on a high.

Carroll will step aside as the most successful coach in franchise history, but with an unsatisfactory conclusion after several seasons of middling results.

The former New England Patriots and New York Jets head coach never fully recovered from what happened in the Super Bowl a year later, when Russell Wilson’s goal line interception in the final seconds broke Seahawks hearts, and Seattle never experienced another title that could wash away the memories of what happened in Super Bowl 49.

Carroll bows out with a 137-69-1 record in his time as Seahawks head coach. He also led the franchise to five NFC West titles and 10 playoff victories.
