mi vs rcb: ishan kishan, rohit sharma on cusp of achieving huge milestone for mumbai indians in ipl
Ishan Kishan and Rohit Sharma have emerged as Mumbai Indians’ (MI) one of the most successful opening pairs in the Indian Premier League (IPL) and they are now set to achieve a huge milestone. With 1203 runs for the first wicket, Ishan and Rohit are at the second spot in the list of MI’s openers with the most runs.
They are behind Quinton de Kock and Rohit, who scored 1269 runs together. The present opening pair is set to overtake the previous opening pair in the ongoing season. They will hope to put on a big partnership in the marquee clash against Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) on Thursday (April 11) and achieve this record at the home ground.
While Rohit has been part of MI since 2011, Ishan joined the team in the IPL 2018 mega-auction for Rs 6.20 crore. Ishan was uncapped back then. Ishan and Rohit started to open the innings in 2021.
The franchise invested heavily in Ishan in the IPL 2022 mega-auction and bought him for Rs 15.25 crore. Rohit was retained before the auction for Rs 16 crore.
As for de Kock and Rohit, they opened the innings from IPL 2019 to 2021. MI were looking to get a new opening partner for Rohit and brought in de Kock from RCB via trade. de Kock played a key role in MI’s title wins in IPL 2019 and 2020.
He piled up 529 runs in IPL 2019 and followed up with 503 runs. The successful opening pair between Rohit and de Kock played a key role in MI’s back-to-back title wins. MI tried to re-sign de Kock in the IPL 2022 mega-auction but missed out. He now plays for Lucknow Super Giants.
The opening pair of Parthiv Patel and Lendl Simmons sits at the third spot. The former MI openers added 854 runs in 19 innings.
Sachin Tendulkar and Sanath Jayasuriya’s opening pair sits next. The cricketing legends together scored 719 runs in 20 innings. Tendulkar continued to open the innings till 2013 and retired after winning the IPL title that year.
The opening pair of Evin Lews and Suryakumar Yadav sit at the fifth spot. They added 495 runs in 11 innings in IPL 2018. Suryakumar was given the opening job when he made his return to MI in 2018. He now bats at number 3. Suryakumar’s success in IPL 2018 earned him a place in the India A team. He made his India T20I debut in 2021.
