uk set for 'major snow event' within days and 'four inches per hour'

WX Charts, which uses Met Desk data, has published forecasts suggesting up to four inches per hour – 10cm – later this week.

Weather forecasters have announced a “major snow event” is coming to the UK as snow maps show four inches PER HOUR hitting. WX Charts, which uses Met Desk data, has published forecasts suggesting up to four inches per hour – 10cm – later this week.

James Madden said in an update today (Tuesday, February 27) that “a major and widespread snow event” is heading our way overnight on Thursday (February 29) and early on Friday (March 1). Mr Madden, on the Exacta Weather social media pages, said the initial blast will bring a risk of “moderate to heavy snow” in Ireland before it moves across the UK.

He wrote: “This snow risk will then extend into many western parts of the UK from the far north of Scotland all the way down to Wales during the early hours of Friday.” He went on: “The heaviest and most disruptive of these snow showers are more likely across some large parts of Scotland, Cumbria/Lake District, northern/north-west England, Merseyside, Wales.”

The snow will even stretch “to parts of Yorkshire/Humber and some central regions as these heavy snow showers become well organised as they spread inland across our shores,” he added. The forecaster said there’s a risk of wintry showers further south.

Mr Madden said: “Even parts as far south as south-west England are likely to see some wintry weather and potentially moderate snow in places within this period and the only real question mark on the regions not facing any wintry weather from this weather event currently lies in parts of the southeast and to the east of England.

“However, some kind of wintry weather can’t be entirely ruled out in these parts within this period and into this weekend.” He explained: “Our widespread snow forecast and expectations for last week never materialised as we had earlier anticipated and when other forecasts from elsewhere were forecasting that there would be no major snow for this period either.

“However confidence is much higher on this developing scenario and conclusively proves that we don’t follow the lead of others who simply copy each others forecasts from day to day.”
