The Kansas City Chiefs offseason is about to ramp up as the football world prepares for the 2024 NFL Draft.

While head coach Andy Reid and general manager Brett Veach are the shot-callers for Kansas City on draft day, Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes told reporters this week that he is taking on a larger role for the team in their player selection process.

“I’ve [looked] at some of the stuff,” Mahomes said of his new position as a pseudo-scout. “It’s cool that Veach and coach Reid kind of let me in on all of the conversations that they have about players. I like that stuff. I like watching film and watching other guys from college and stuff like that.”

Despite being given such important access in front office decision-making, Mahomes understands that Veach is one of the best in the business in evaluating and identifying talent that can help the team win.

“At the end of the day, we have the greatest of greatest as far as GMs and head coach and the staffs that they build, so I know they’re going to get great players in here, Mahomes explained. “I’ll give my input, but I trust they’re going to do the work to get the great players in. You’ve seen our team; it seems like we get younger and younger every single year and that comes from drafting.”

Though he might not be the person making calls to prospects when the draft kicks off on April 25, Mahomes’ involvement in such a crucial aspect of the team-building process could be a boon for Kansas City next season.
