A total of 38 areas in the Philippines may experience a heat index within the danger level on Thursday, PAGASA said Wednesday.

Heat indexes ranging from 42°C to 47°C are possible in the following areas on Thursday, based on PAGASA’s 5 p.m. Wednesday forecast.

42°C:

—Casiguran, Aurora

—Tayabas City, Quezon

—Infanta, Quezon

—Alabat, Quezon

—Coron, Palawan

—Masbate City, Masbate

—Tacloban City, Leyte

—Guiuan, Eastern Samar

—Davao City, Davao del Sur

—Cotabato City, Maguindanao

43°C:

—Science Garden, Quezon City, Metro Manila

—Bacnotan, La Union

—Aparri, Cagayan

—ISU Echague, Isabela

—Iba, Zambales

—Clark Airport (DMIA), Pampanga

—Baler (Radar), Aurora

—Mulanay, Quezon

The lowest heat index prediction was for Baguio City, Benguet, and BSU, La Trinidad, Benguet, at 28°C.

PAGASA defines heat index as the measure of the temperature that a person feels, which is different from the actual air temperature. It is computed by factoring in humidity and air temperature.

In areas with a danger level heat index, which is from 42°C to 51°C, heat cramps and heat exhaustion are likely, according to PAGASA. Heat stroke is also possible with continued exposure.

PAGASA recommends limited outdoor activity, consistent hydration, and wearing fresh clothes to combat the effects of intense heat. — VBL, GMA Integrated News
