This agile and intelligent humanoid robot could soon be working with humans

Phoenix is a humanoid robot that is both agile and intelligent, capable of reproducing highly accurate movements or gestures to assist humans in arduous, dangerous or high-precision tasks.

Developed by the Canadian startupSanctuary AI, Phoenix is designed to perform physical tasks autonomously, while still being able to interact with humans. The robot is equipped with a sophisticated manipulation system, and its hands are equipped with perfectly articulated fingers. So, in theory, it should be able to perform any gesture that a human can. Its built-in artificial intelligence enables it to learn and adapt to new situations.

Sanctuary AI has designed its Phoenix robot as a general-purpose worker, capable of performing a wide variety of tasks in different sectors, from logistics to healthcare, if needed. Similar to the “average” human, Phoenix is 1.70 m tall, weighs 70 kg and can move around at 5 km/h.

Compared to the many other humanoid robots currently in development, mainly in the USA and China, Phoenix stands out not only for its ability to perform fluid, precise movements, but also for its integrated artificial intelligence system. The aim is for it to be able to understand and execute complex instructions, alone or in collaboration with humans. Sanctuary AI explains that its robot can even be remotely piloted by a human operator, if required.

Phoenix is constantly being developed to refine its learning capabilities. Eventually, it could work in industry, performing repetitive tasks in factories or on building sites, as well as in the healthcare sector, assisting doctors. The robot could also explore environments that were previously inaccessible because they are too dangerous for humans.

Humanoid robot projectsare multiplying, the idea being to create flexible, intelligent devices that can eventually replace humans in repetitive, thankless tasks. In the USA alone, Tesla has already presented its Optimus robot, and other startups such as Boston Dynamics and Figure have demonstrated their expertise in creating agile robots. Meanwhile, China’s Xiaomi is working on a robot capable of recognizing people and their expressions and emotions. Combined with artificial intelligence, as with Phoenix, all these robots could one day interact with humans.
