'Out of My Hands': Dune 3 Challenges Addressed by Rebecca Ferguson
Denis Villeneuve’s Dune: Part Two outperformed the first film and became the biggest film of 2023, with fans already excited about Dune 3. However, the space opera faces some challenges, Lady Jessica actress Rebecca Ferguson explained.
Denis Villeneuve, who adapted Frank Herbert’s sci-fi novel of the same name into two chapters, has recently given an encouraging update about Dune 3, which will follow the second book and be titled Dune: Messiah. With all the excitement going on, Ferguson noted that the road to the big screen faces some challenges during an interview with The Playlist. She also explained that the original actors haven’t signed any deals for a third film.

Dune: Part Two Approaches Box Office Milestone Following Digital Release
Hot on the heels of its digital release, Dune: Part Two starring Timothe Chalamet and Zendaya is about to hit a major box office milestone.
“[The new movie is] banking and people are loving it, and it has the most phenomenal cast in it. Of course, there would be a third one, but it’s a lot of pressure on Denis. It’s a lot of pressure to continue,” Ferguson told the outlet. “And when do you make the creative decision? Do you go when it is at the best, or do you make one that could fail and not be as good?”
“It’s a really tricky conversation. It depends on the script; it depends on the money. It depends on all of the actors that have not got a deal for the third film. That’s a lot going on there. So there’s a lot to take into consideration before just writing a third script, y’know?”
Speaking whether were there any clues about the third Dune on set, Ferguson noted that she tried to talk him into it. “I just manipulate. I manipulate I just, whenever I can. Y’know those Coca-Cola commercials, back in the day when they just went Coca-Cola, big pictures, and Fight Club? That’s me with Denis. I just whispered little weird things in his ears that I wanted to do. He was like, “Oh, stop it.” Oh, to be honest, it’s completely out of my hands. He has clearly made a spectacular world…”
Ferguson also admitted she has no idea what the third movie would be about. “I mean, I haven’t read it, so I literally dunno,” noting that, she does know that her character’s son might not be the Messiah people were expecting. “Clearly, we’re not going to be that close to the book. That’s ridiculous. Although I would love to see Timothee turn into a worm. As long as my character doesn’t go and sit [somewhere] hot and covered in fabrics, I’m happy.”

Dune: Messiah Might Take a While to Hit Theaters
Dune: Messiah doesn’t have a production date, since Denis Villeneuve is just penning the script. The director shared his wish to take his time and make sure the script was good. On top of that, he already has planned a different film as his next project, an adaptation of Annie Jacobsen’s Nuclear War: A Scenario.
On top of that, there’s also the issue of scheduling. The film has several A-list actors, like Timothee Chalamet, Zendaya, and Florence Pugh among others, and it might be difficult to find a schedule to suit all of them soon.
However, that is not a bad thing. The first two films arrived with a three-year gap, and the anticipation proved beneficial. Dune: Part Two quickly soared past the first film, both in the reviews and the box office numbers, as it grossed $696.9 million worldwide, more than 2021’s Dune: Part One’s $431.1 million (via The Numbers). Because of the anticipation, the wait might work in Dune: Messiah’s favor.
Dune: Part Two is still in theaters and also available for rent or purchase digitally.
