There were few surprises at this year’s Bafta Video Game Awards ceremony, with Alan Wake 2 and Super Mario Bros. Wonder both winning twice.

Although the Bafta Video Game Awards can end up with some unlikely winners sometime, such as picking Vampire Survivors as last year’s best game, there were no real surprises this year, as Baldur’s Gate 3 won Best Game in the 2024 ceremony.

The widely acclaimed role-player picked up five Baftas in the end: Best Game, Narrative, Music, EE Players’ Choice Award (the only one voted for by the public), and Performer in a Supporting Role for Andrew Wincott as Raphael.

Although Baldur’s Gate 3 won the most awards no game really dominated, with Super Mario Bros. Wonder, Alan Wake 2, and Viewfinder all going home with two trophies apiece.

Zelda: Tears Of The Kingdom won Technical Achievement, Dave The Diver won Game Design, and Hi-Fi Rush picked up the Animation award.

Nadji Jeter won the Performer in a Leading Role award for his turn as Miles Morales in Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, which surprisingly, had the most number of nominations after Baldur’s Gate 3 – although in the end it only won once.

Although Viewfinder seems very much the odd one out (Bafta often tends to be overly generous with British developers) it’s an otherwise perfectly reasonable set of winners, even if we, once again, seem to be amongst the few that weren’t impressed by Alan Wake 2.

The award ceremony in London was hosted by comedian Phil Wang, while Eidos co-founder by Sir Ian Livingstone presented The Bafta Specia Award to charity SpecialEffect, for its work in improving disabled access in video games.
