Bursitis is an inflammation that occurs in a bag-shaped structure (called a bursa) that covers most of the body’s joints (synovial joints, such as those in the shoulders, knees and elbows, for example). It is a condition that courses with pain and swelling of the joint, which can cause, due to the pain involved, movement limitation and significant impairment of quality of life.

Bursitis is a painful inflammation of bursa, a fluid filled sac located near a joint. Specific areas of the body produce different types of bursitis with different symptoms. Most common sites are shoulder bursitis, Hip bursitis, knee bursitis, ankle bursitis, elbow bursitis. Bursitis is most frequently found in people who are middle aged or older, who are obese or diabetic.

Bursitis occurs when bursae become inflamed. This way, anyplace part of the body that has a bursae can suffer from it. This will be more likely to appear in shoulder, elbow and hips, however it can also be present in other joints like knee and heel.
