The Premier League has been criticised for its handling of the case against Everton over breaches of its financial rules, as Nottingham Forest await their fate.
Everton’s 10-point deduction for breaking the Premier League’s profitability and sustainability rules was reduced to six points on Monday after an appeal by the club. Forest, meanwhile, are expected to face an independent commission next week, after being charged by the Premier League in January for breaching its financial rules.
The Reds could also face sanctions, including a points deduction, while Everton could be docked further points over a second charge of breaching the financial rules. The mayor of Greater Manchester, Andy Burnham, who is an Everton fan and season ticket holder, has criticised the Premier League in the wake of the Toffees’ points deduction being reduced and called for an independent regulator to oversee English football.
“The Premier League has proved, in my view, that they can’t properly regulate football through the way it’s treated Everton Football Club,” Mr Burnham told Sky News. “We need a strong, independent statutory regulator for football, learning from all of the wrong things that have been done over recent weeks.”
He added: “There’s been some recognition today (Monday) that it (the 10-point deduction) wasn’t fair. We take that, but they’re trying to place a second charge on Everton. And I would say isn’t that double jeopardy to try and take another process against us for the same thing?
“The club isn’t being treated fairly.”
