Feyenoord speelt de traditionele openingswedstrijd van het nieuwe seizoen tegen AS Monaco. Dat meldt het doorgaans goed geïnformeerde 1908.nl althans. Daarmee krijgt de voorbereiding van de nu nog regerend landskampioen een steeds fraaiere vorm. AS Monaco is na Cercle Brugge, FC Dordrecht en Benfica de vierde tegenstander in de aanloop naar het nieuwe seizoen.

Het medium meldde donderdagavond nog dat Feyenoord het mogelijk eind juli/begin augustus in de strijd om de Eusébio Cup opneemt tegen Benfica. De Portugezen hebben Feyenoord uitgenodigd om ter voorbereiding op het nieuwe seizoen af te reizen naar Lissabon. Het vriendschappelijke duel met Benfica vormt voor Feyenoord niet de laatste test voor de Johan Cruijff Schaal tegen PSV. Nadat Villarreal vorig jaar de tegenstander was in de traditionele openingswedstrijd in De Kuip, is het dit jaar de beurt aan AS Monaco.

“Feyenoord en AS Monaco communiceren op een later moment zelf de exacte details over de kaartverkoop alsmede de datum van het openingsduel”, zo klinkt het. AS Monaco is bezig aan een goed seizoen in eigen land. Het bezet momenteel de tweede plaats in de Ligue 1. De achterstand op Paris Saint-Germain is, met nog drie wedstrijden te gaan, twaalf punten. Door de 3-2 nederlaag van AS Monaco bij Olympique Lyonnais afgelopen zondag kroonde PSG zich andermaal tot kampioen van Frankrijk. AS Monaco strijdt in de laatste wedstrijden nog om rechtstreekse deelname aan het hoofdtoernooi van de Champions League. De voorsprong op nummer vier Lille is slechts drie punten.
